Regions

North Iceland & Lake Mývatn

Fire country

Around Lake Mývatn the earth is visibly alive: pseudocraters, lava formations, boiling mud pots and steam vents, with a geothermal bath to end the day.

To the north, the bays near Húsavík are among the best places in Iceland for whale watching.

Best season: All year; aurora in winter, whales in summer · [ 65° 36′ 14″ N, 16° 59′ 46″ W ]

Experiences here

  • Whale watching

Private boat charters out of the northern fjords for humpbacks, minkes and, on rare days, blue whales.

  • Geothermal baths

Hot springs and private geothermal pools, from designed lagoons to remote natural pools steaming in the snow.

  • Aurora hunting

We watch the forecasts and the cloud cover and drive to wherever the sky is clearest — with blankets, hot chocolate and a photographer if you wish.
