Blue icebergs drifting in a glacier lagoon

Regions

Vatnajökull & the Glacier Lagoon

The great ice

Vatnajökull covers around eight percent of Iceland. Its outlet glaciers spill down towards the coast, and beneath them, in winter, form the blue ice caves.

At the glacier lagoon, icebergs calve, turn and drift towards the sea, some washing up on the black beach nearby like pieces of glass.

Best season: Ice caves in winter; glacier hikes all year · [ 64° 04′ 42″ N, 16° 13′ 50″ W ]

Verify before launch: Ice cave season and access to verify each year with certified partners.

Ice caves

Ice caves change every year and are only entered with certified guides when they are judged safe. We do not compromise on this.

Experiences here

  • Blue ice caves

Inside the glacier itself: caves of compressed, ancient ice that glow an impossible blue. Visited only with certified ice cave guides, only when conditions are safe.

  • Glacier hiking

Crampons on, rope between you and your guide, out across the crevassed tongues of Vatnajökull's outlet glaciers.

  • Helicopter flights

Over steaming fissures, glacier ice-fields and remote ridgelines, with private landings where the land allows.
